Another question about a plant which I am beginning to suspect is not a true aqaurium plant!

I just put in some "stardust ivy" or so I was told it was called - I can't find any mention of this plant anywhere so I can't get info on it.

It is about 25cm tall, tall stemmed, large variagated light and dark green leaves and does look quite ivy like?

Any ideas?

As far as i know its a house plant or some of them are marginal plants, not true aquatic plants, look up "arrowhead plant" and you may find it.

The plant most often sold as "Stardust Ivy" is Syngonium podophyllum which will not last long underwater. There are a few other Syngonium species which also appear from time to time. Take it out and pot it up.

Most plants that are capable of supporting themselves out of water, i.e. dont flop into a heap, are not suitable, and most plants with highly variegated leaves are not aquatic. As always, there are exceptions, but there are a lot more non-aquatics sold as suitable for tanks.

There is a picture and auction from someone who doesn't know better here!

Lateral Line, thats the guy I bought it from! - I also bought "aqau fern" which I have learned is also not a true aquatic.

This has really annoyed me - I spent several hours on my tank yesterday getting all the plants in and now I'm going to have to start from scratch.

Why do sellers do this - both item descriptions say the plants will grow well in any aquarium!!!?!?

>>> Why do sellers do this

Sorry to say it, but it is because people take their word for it and buy their goods. If the buyers new plants "don't grow", well, for the seller, that's so much the better, they'll need to buy more now.

It is not just "non aquatics" that cause disappointment. Plants are just as fussy as fish and anything else living. If you buy a plant that demands 4wpg lighting and give it 2wpg, it won't work. If your plant demands a pH of less then 7.0 and you give it 8, it isn't going to work. Etc.

Buy your plants from a reputable dealer, or research the species before bidding. You can always ask here, post a link to the auction and someone here will be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi there,

This wouldn't happen to be a seller called tropical-aquarium-plants would it? I got stung in the same way. This is the e-mail conversation i had about it.

Not only did my order take three weeks to arrive but five of the plants I ordered are non-aquarium plants.

Fountain plant

Violet Ivy

Bamboo/coconut plant
(don't have a link)
Stardust Ivy

Aqua Fern

So obviously i'm less than happy.

Hi There

I have all these plants in my tanks and they are aquatic, if you want though you can send these ones back to me and i will replace them with other types if you will feel better with other plants. Loads of different sites will state some plants are one thing over another, they will also call certain plants different names than they should, but if you would feel better with other plants that is ok

Please let me know

Thanks
Laura

Shame i have taken them all out of the tank. Guess i could have sent them back crispy.

You should have posted feedback on her sellers profile......bad feedback......especially the fact that she insists THEY ARE aquatic plants.

But the fact of the matter is its widespread, i went to a local garden centre on sunday, its quite large and they have a quite decent tropical fish section, but i went really to look at plants, everyone of the plants were non aquatic, about ten different types, it seems to be very very common at a lot of lfs that i visit.

Simoriax, yes that is the one!

Unfortunately I left good feedback before I knew about the plants being non-aquatic. I will definately contact her and make a complaint although judging by what she said to you I don't think she will listen.

I have left them in the tank and will get rid of them as soon as they show signs of going mushy!

Its a shame as they look really great!

I ordered them off her website. I did order a java fern on bogwood from her ebay site and got next day delivery. Was fantastic service so i gave her good feedback. She took three weeks to deliver my order from the website. Can't give bad feedback there can you? I've spread the word of how un-impressed i am though!

haddock, send them back mate.
