I just got my friend's zebra danio today because she couldn't take care of it any longer. It is large and healthy. When I was watching it, I saw it spasm a few times... I talked to my friend about it and she said that that danio has always done that his whole life (he's 1 1/2 years old). It doesn't ever look sick, it is normal most of the time.

Why does it spasm?

Could be a number of things.
Does he flick and rub on things.
How big is the tank in gallons.

He seems to "rub" himself on the gravel... he has done this his whole life. The tank WAS 5 gallons, but now I got him in my 29 gal.

No signs of parasites on him.
Look at your stats first.
He could have a parasite like flukes which are not visable to the naked eye.
Does he ever swim with a jerky movement.

He swims normally. He doesn't seem like he has parasites. The tank he used to live in was normally very clean.

Something making him rub on the gravel.
Fish carry a few flukes it's only as they get infested with them you notice the symtoms.
Ask the owner if he ever flicked and rubbed himself in her tank.

He has.

I just don't understand, this fish has been medicated many times during his life... he has never seemed sick or anything. He eats. He isn't emaciated.

For now I would ask the owner then can go from there if he's flicked and rubbed himself on things in the tank.

Just wondering: Can salt and/or heat kill fluke (if this fish has fluke)

The danio seems to spasm and then rub things, because he spasms. I don't know...

Salt dosn't do much with flukes.
Just see how he goes tonight.

I have 5 Danios and they all do this worrying me a lot, but I think it must just be the way they dart around, because I don't med for them anymore and they all survive (strange that only the Danios do this, is it a characteristic?)

my danios swim around for ages, stop on the bottom as if its dead, then gets up and swims off again, as if playing then just catching its breath!
