Sorry I keep posting, but I want to make sure I am making my brackish tank for my archer as good as possible. I have the salinity set and it is cycled and everything, but I was just wondering what kind of set up would be good for this fish (and a couple gobies)? Should it be more open or a lot of cover? Should I leave the water level down a couple of inches? Thanks in advance, I really want to make my fish happy.

Your archer couldn't care less about a lower water level. Mostly, they get their food from the surface of the water (things like insects that fall on the water). Spitting at food is something they do only rarely in the wild. If they can't spit or jump in your aquarium, they won't mind.

What archers like is shade they can lurk under. Some floating plants could be used, or else plastic plants attached to the top of the tank so that they spread out across the top layer of water. You'll find your archer will happily lurk in the shade.

Do be careful when choosing tankmates: archers are skilled predators and eat small gobies!

Thanks again. I Have a lot of hiding places in my tank if I were to get some gobies, but I am still having second thoughts. So the archer won't care what is on the bottom of the tank?

Archers couldn't care less what goes on below the top 20 cm of the aquarium. Put some shade at the top for them, and then do whatever you want for the gobies. If knight gobies, a variety of flower pots (or similar) would be ideal. If violet gobies, some sand for digging and PVC tubes for hiding. Rocks and shells would suit most smaller gobies (think about a tide pool and you'll have a very fair idea of what gobies want out of life).

Cheers, Neale
