hiya all
well we have been having a reshuffle of the tanks last week & have some questions for anyone who might be able to shed some light on a strange situation
i have a 4 foot 55 gallon tank with an aquaone 1200 filter on it, its running with the spray bar on as well. i have an airstone in there as well. i have had to take some of my corys out due to them losing their barbels which i couldn't understand with regular tank maintenance. anyway i move some different corys in there on friday been away for the weekend & when we have got back i noticed that my 9 albino corys i put in there were really quiet so of course panicked  .
the only thing i can think that is different to any other of my 6 tanks is this 1 has the external filter running on it, the rest have internals.
now my question is could the lack of water movement be causing these problems, it only appears to be the corys that are affected  :S
middle/ top dwellers seem ok
water stats are:
ammonia 0
nitrIte 0
nitrAte 20
i have now put a power head in there to get the water moving & the corys did seem to get more life in them so has anyone any thoughts on this
sorry its so long as well lol
thanks trace

i find my corys become rather lifeless when the water is warm i think they prefer it rather cooler, is there a temp diffrence in any of the tanks?

not an awful lot of difference, but that wouldn't explain why my swartzii (sp) lost their barbels & i did lose other corys in there as well :/ :-(

anyone else think that could have been my problem with the tank, the lack of water movement ??
i'm starting to think that maybe i was right :D due to the fact that the fish that were in there are now in another tank & they all seen loads more active now

right now i'm going to sound like a sulky child now but.......
i've kinda asked for a bit of help trying to work out something that could possible be harming my fish & only 1 person has given an answer now if i had put that i had 20 fish in a 6 gal tank everyone would have answered to have a go at me. now i know some 1 will say that people don't have time to sit on their pc all day answering questions but every 1 is quick enough if they can have a go at people. this i have noticed over the last couple of weeks & i could name the people that start a thread & inside 1 day they have 3 pages of answers of people having a good old dig at them.
then you get the people that ask for help over a problem that the experienced people on here could answer & they get totally ignored.
i'm sorry if i have offended anyone with this but its not the first i've asked about a problem & almost been ignored cos i'm not asking if i can put a silly amount of fish in a tiny tank

I totally agree with you trace.

Hi there, maybe if you ask your question on the cory board you'd get a better response, this is really a chat board so maybe no one here has a specialist knowledge of cories?

Inchworm may be away, I checked and she hasn't posted for a week so maybe she's on holiday? I know she'd be able to help you, and she mods this board, maybe you just picked a bad time to ask. I'd take my question over to the cory board if I was you.

i did also post on the cory board but its not just about the corys there were other fish in there as well. to be honest its not just this time as well. i've noticed it before & its not just my threads that i'm talking about either i'm speaking for other people as well.

Sorry, I totally missed your post, it's easily done, you know, and not done deliberately to offend. Maybe a more specific title might have drawn my eye (Some advice is a little vague and doesn't really tell me that this is something I might know about- most subjects I don't!). I can't promise that, though. Sometimes it's just a bit haphazard what you see, particularly when you're being distracted by things around you all the time.

If your cories lost their barbels, I would have thought it would be to do with bacteria in the substrate. I had this problem last summer, when the weather got hot. Maybe there is a part of your tank that does not get enough water movement or misses out at cleaning time (something like a cave?). I found my problems were resolved by adding an extra air stone, doing twice weekly gravel vacs when the weather was really hot and cleaning under the cave every week.

If you are doing proper maint on the tank- which includes vacuuming, then it might be your substrate which you did not describe. High nitrate is another cause of barbel loss.

Also- this is a very active forum. If I visit once a day there are normally 7-8 pages of new posts. I will only view posts whose title is descriptive enough to draw my attention or peak my curiosity.

You also don't mention all the folks who post asking for advice or help and then refuse to take that advice.

What is the temp in the tank and what types of cories do you have?
What type of substrate do you have? If it is gravel, is it large, small, rough, rounded etc?
Loss of barbels points to bacterial infection, but bacterial infections in cories, although they can come about randomly with no apparent direct cause, can also be caused by certain things in a cories environment.
Does the tank have any heavily planted/decorated areas that provide shade or hiding places? What sorts of other fish do you have in there? What do you feed your cories on average and how much?

the tank has sand substrate in it always has had, reagular water changes plants coconunt caves so plenty of places to hide. i did try treating for bacterial infection & fin rot as i had read somewhere that finrot can also cause cories to lose their barbels. another thing they did when they were in there is shimmy thing thats how to describe it. they were in that tank with gouramis female bettas 2 zebra loaches others corys which died slowly over time. it seemed to be anything that i tried putting in there that were bottom dwellers didn't do well :/
that is why i wondered if it was cos i had the external running with the spray bar so really only the top of the water moved & 1 air line running at the back.

as it is the new fish in there seen totally fine now even the corys & i now also have a internal filter running to promote water movement & it has helped a lot. every1 is as active as they are supposed to be now even my albino panda bronze & skunk corys :D
will still keep a very close eye on it for the next couple of weeks
thanks for the replies guys & girls
:D :D :D
