Once it's cycled, one of my tanks will definantly be for a betta :D

The other tank...I can't decide! It's close to being cycled, stuck on the nitrite spike right now. I want something else other than a betta for this tank and am stuck between platies, african dwarf frogs, a couple guppies or a couple cherry barbs. As of right now I'm leaning towards getting a couple cherry barbs, they just seem really interesting to me lol. I just wish I had more room for a bigger tank!

well cherry barbs are gret little fellows , so get a pair one male (bright red) female (browm with stripe) they are vey cute and good tempered...and are often sold very small....good luck with them defintly worth it!!! :D  :hyper:

go for the cherry barbs!

Platties =) very colorful, active, playful and smart fish, they're very much like female Bettas, only really colorful =) a trio would be nice; male and female, when they spawn you could sell the fry back to a petstore or use them as live food for your Betta!

In my humble opinion, a 2.5 gallon tank does not allow swimmers like guppies, barbs, or even platies enough room to move. Although I keep mine in bigger tanks, bettas are the only fish I'd say can live comfortably in a tank that small. If you don't want to get two male bettas, why not get a male in one tank and a female in the other? I actually find my female bettas have more personality than my males do, and as for platies being like female bettas but more colourful, my females bettas are a zillion times more personable than any platy I ever had and, when kept in prime conditions, are extremely colourful as well.

After doing a lot of research I decided against the cherry barbs. I just feel they'd thrive more in something like a 5 gallon tank or bigger, that goes for the other fish I mentioned.

I've looked more into Dwarf Gouramis and was wondering if they do well alone? Most of the info I found was rather sketchy on this subject, so any info would be greatly appreciated

I'd be more than happy to house bettas in the tanks I have, I just want to explore all my options before I make any purchases :)

my mom and younger brother keep teasing me with getting a 20 gallon tank for the living room. I hope they're up to something LOL :D

A dwarf gourami will do fine alone. I suppose one might go in a 2.5 gal, though personally I wouldn't keep any fish in a tank that small.

10-15 gallons is the recommended minimum tank size for Dwarf Gouramis. If you think about it from the fish's perspective, I can't imagine many of them would choose a 2,5 gallon tank for a long term recidence. A Gourami would do alone, but most smaller fish are schooling fish, or at least need a couple of mates like Platies. The only fish I'd put in a 2,5 gallon is a Betta.
