Hi all

I am in the process of cycling my 200L tank, my tank is clearing 4ppm of ammonia in about 16 hours. the only problem i have got is that i put some plants in there when i first got the tank and they had snails in. Does it matter if they are in there? they seem to be doubling in numbers. What is the best way to get rid of them without upseting my cycling?

Thank you all in advance for your help.

James

Since you're cycling, if you really don't want them get some anti-snail chemicals and be done with it.

Once you have fish, this becomes much more dangerous.

yep, I had snails whilst doing fishless cycling (bought in from the plants) so I used chemicals to get rid of them and not seen any since. Wouldn't use chemicals with fish, but since you don't have any you may as well tackle those snails head-on and get rid of them now.

Are the snails really that bad i ended up with two from my plants ones getting quite large and the other is growing rapidly not sure i want to take to killing them as my daughter would possible kill me, will two manage to breed and cause me problems? Sorry for the thread hijack

The main problem with pest snails is they multiply really really quickly and you can end up with an awful lot awfully quick so you need to keep them under control to a certain extent at least. They don't even need a mate to reproduce I don't think. They can eat plants too.

that's the main issue. a few snails aren't bad. they can actually be helpful by cleaning up uneaten food, dead plants, etc. the problem is most of the ones that just "show up" reproduce like mad. they must have a population doubling time of at most 1-2 days once established.

I have snails in my planted tank. Im not sure what type they are but they do eat the waste food and stuff. A few are beneficial to a tank.

After the initial population outburst so long as you don’t over feed they will die off on there own. Just through simple starvation and competition.

I have about 15 small snails ( 5 mm long) and they have had a stable population for about 4 months now.

i had snails when i was cycling - i took them out and crushed them as and when i saw them!

since i've got fish though i haven't seen a single one - i think the fish eat the babies :good:

I had a few snails in an old tank of mine..Well what I thought was a few , turned out to be about 40 of them.. They were hard to see because they blended in so well with the gravel..
