Has anyone ever heard of swordtails that munch on snails? I have a brood of swordtail fry - not really fry any longer - about 1" long now in a 55G where I had 2 ivory trap door snails. The snails had been doing great for about 6 months - doubled in size, etc, etc. So, I went on vacation in early august and when I got home, both of the snails were dead - even more than that, they were gone, except for an empty shell. I had been treating for ich with high temps and salt, so I figured that one of those was the culprit.
So, I like having snail, and the temp is down and the salt is out, so I went and bought more snails. I put them in the tank, and the swordtails immediately start attacking the snail. The snail of course, closes the door, but the swordtails try biting at it between the shell and the door (there's a small gap). It seems that it was probably the swordtails that ate the other snails and now they have a taste for escargot (sp?)
Anyone heard of that before?
The other fish in the tank are serpae tetras, black neon tetras, zebra danios and common plecs.
