I have just set up my first tank, it has been running for 3 days with no fish yet. I have added gravel which was thoroughly washed, two rocks also scrubbed up and the water. I added some dechlorinater to take out chloramines. My tank seemed to be running fine for the first two days, but now it has developed an unpleasant odour and i dont know where this has come from or what it is. I added some plants just a day ago but the smell was there before that. As yet I have not added any fish. I am panicking that i may have done something badly wrong.
Can anyone help?

i have never noticed an unpleasant odour before
someone described the smell as warm mist i think, or walking in the woods after a rain storm, sort of pleasant, faint, musty smell
certainly not a bad one, but as you are only just starting, have you started adding ammonia to it??
i would expect it to settle down soon, if not, maybe you didnt scrub hard enough and some unwanted 'stuff' got in there

All my tanks have an odor. The water smells like dirt. It is not an unpleasant smell. It smells like dirt after it rains. The smell does not change, I mean it never gets worse. I use charcoal in the filter but the smell is still there. If it's that earthy smell I wouldn't worry about it.

Supersalmon - Welcome to the forum. If it is your first tank there are some great articles pinned to the top of the beginner section to help you set up and cycle your tank. Good luck and keep posting your questions.

Definitely an "earthy" smell to a functioning, cycled tank. If you've just set it up, then you are presumably cycling at the moment, during that process - some of the noxious nitrogen compounds can smell a bit.
