When looking at everyone's pictures here I see tanks that look a lot smaller than mine but apparently are much bigger!

I'll explain.

My new tank for instance is 4 x 1 x 1 (feet) or 48 x 12 x 12 (inches).

I use the online calculator here http://www.firsttankguide.net/calculator.php to work out how many litres that is.

Your tank's volume is approximately 6912 cubic inches or 29.92 U.S. gallons, which is approximately 116.4 liters.

But when I look at people's tanks here they're like 75 gallon, or ridiculously high figures but they seem smaller than mine - am I calculating mine wrong?

Example 1 - http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=140695

Apparently a 90L tank, my new one according to the calculator is only 116 Litres, but trust me looks about 3 times the size of that!! (Especially when you compare the size of the gouramis to the walls, that tank looks tiny.)

its a bit moe simple than that - you are only taking into count your length. the depth n width is also very important.

for the example tank it looks to be only 2ft wide, based on the food tubs. thats half of yours. however, it also looks to be 15" deep and 15" high (a whole 3" in each direction BIGGER than yours.

in fact...... yup thats it 24x15x15 is 90L roughly.
