i have a 29 gallon tank...
no plants..
planning to get java fern/moss

i have 6 black neon tetras and 6 zebra danios

should i get any kind of barbs?? i.e tiger barbs, cherry barbs...

The species you have are not the biggest, nor the most aggressive . . . especially if the danios are the long fin variety. If you've got your heart set on barbs, go for the passive species such as shuberti/golden barbs. Do your research on specific species, because temperments vary. If tiger barbs are not kept in a big enough school, your other fish will pay the price. Even then the tigers might be too much to handle.

Serpae tetras are fast, active, and quite nippy towards each other. Still, at a pet shop I saw a single tiger barb, which had hopped tanks, terrorize an entire tank of serpaes and basically shread through al lof them.

Personally I'd recommend getting some fish that enhabit other zones . . . Blah, sorry I like catfish too much. :p

lol, so u suggest i should get something like a cory cat fish?? or a pepered cat fish?? soemthing int that category??

lol, I love cories. I love gold barbs too; but it's just my style to make tanks with different types of fish. Right now, you got 2 pretty large happy schools of small fish of the basic body type. Aesthetically speaking, do you really want to use more space on a third school swimming around the same area as the neons?

hi
we've a boy six pack of 3 tigers & 3 green tigers & we love them. theyre really active mischevious fish great fun to watch.they can be a bit skittish when your fiddling about in the tank ( ours FREAK at the algae magnet moving have to do it really sloooowwwly so they dont stress) but are gorgeous characters.i love watching them have little dominance fights (whos going to be king barb for the day) as they go nose to nose with their dorsal fins stretched right up at full sail & spin around & around at a million miles an hour, no damage to eachother though.
ours are in with zebras & neons & other fish & we've never had any problems but you need to make sure you have at least 6 tigers if you hav space as theyre happiest & much less prone to bothering their tankmates when in a gang. we've never ever seen our barbs nip or bother anything else in our tank :D

I have Black Ruby Barbs and Cherry Barbs. The Black Rubies are very similar to Tigers but don't have the fin-nipping tendency. The males get a nice ruby color on them as well. They are very active and fun to watch. I also have 2 female and one male Cherry Barb. He is a beautiful reddish-orange color and looks great in the tank. Barbs are great!!! :D

ooo i heard some good things about the cherry barb.... but i dunno would i be able to fit 6 more of the barbs??? wouldn't that be a lil cramped for the other shoals of fish i have??

It's not essentail to keep cherry barbs in shoals, they're ok in a pair or trio (one male, one female -or- one male, two females!) so if you went with them, they'd not put such a strain on your tank. In ym opinion you could get a pair of cherry barbs and still have space for say 4 small cories such as corydoras panda as cories produce less waste than other fish but obviously everyone has different opinions on stocking so someone will prob disagree. :) or you could cut out the barbs altogether and just go for a nice shoal of bottom feeders.

My 5 red glass barbs are pretty peaceful considering, they never do anything to any other fish. Tiger barbs on the other hand are a realy pistol.

>>> but i dunno would i be able to fit 6 more of the barbs???

Cherry Barbs are a non schooling fish best kept as a pair or trio, 1 male 2 females. Males kept together in small tanks may fight.

>>> 5 red glass barbs

These are a man made variety of Barbus conchonius, as such they can grow to 3"/80mm or more. A large enough group to keep them happy would overcrowd the tank. They also like a lot of swimming space, a 55 is much better for them.

I am not a fan of Tiger barbs at all  but it's your tank, you do what you want.

That's like mean asking everybody on this forum why they don't have clown loaches :D I just don't like tiger barbs, end of story. :p
