should be fine double bagged, but if you have 3 spare, it can't do no harm.

Yes, especially at this time of year,

i would go for about 20%water 80% air, or enough water to cover the bristlenose with a couple more inches above, If you have an air pump handy i would use that to pump the bag as full of air as possible, ideally from a warm room.

what else can i do to ensure his safe arrival?
obviously just to make the journey as short as possible really,
