ignorance is not bliss.. recently my children won 3 goldfish and of course we put them in the tank we had available a 3 gal. i am now aware of the issues of crowding, the ammonia in the fecal material etc. SO to be humane to the poor fish and keep my kids happy I am looking to get (if possible) 3 fish that would be better suited for that sized tank and trade themwith the pet store. I am looking for opinions on schooling fish. Also, side note a bigger tank is not an option at this point. Thanks!

3 Gallons is a bit small for any schooling fish, but a betta would be great for a tank that size. If not, maby a few neons, but make sure your tank is cycled.

Yes, I keep reading about this cycling topic. Is this nothing more than a filter set up and air-rator?

Also, on a side bar note how can I know for sure if the tank i have will be a suitable size for a new candidate?

No. Cycling is all about growing bacteria in your filter. Please read through this post: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=10099 found in the FAQs, which gives a lot of info about cycling. And please ask any further questions about cycling you may have. We on the forums are very happy to answer any question you may have about cycling.

okay great info... few problems here on my side though, these wonderful bacteria are mianly found in the gravel or filter. I have an octagonal tank with a "built in" filter. Its basically a tube that connects to an under gravel hollow, perferated platform. This has a small air supply tube that sits in the bigger tube. Also, there is no gravel, only marbles. I'm sure at this point you are wondering what kind of a moron I am but we kinda went with our resources. So will this be a suitable set up for cycling to naturally occur? And according to that article this proccess is pretty rough on the fish, how long do you think these goldfish will last? I am already changing the water daily (aprrox40% with cloudy skies)

The bacteria will find a place to grow inside your filter, don't worry. Cycling your tank with fish is stressful, but if you keep doing the water changes, it'll be fine.
