I am nearly complete with my marine tank setup.

I am now at the stage I want to add sand. I am going for around 1 inch sand in the main tank, and a 5 inch Deep sand bed in the sump.

I do not want to add Live sand. I have considered the benefits and have decided to go with regular sand.

I have a few questions:

1) For the main tank, is there any particular type I should go for? I know it should be Aragonite based, and I am going for a fine grain.

2) In the sump, I have seen some people with various layers of sand. Why do people do this? Is this a similar thing I should do?

3) Can the sand be different between the main tank and sump tank?

Thanks.

you can use diffrent sand no problem at all...

I would recommend using Arag Alive both in substrate and dsb, remeber dsb needs to be aroun 10 cm deep with a slow flow over it for maximum denitrification.

use arag alive for long time and its the best...

go with what ever you have. seed the dsb with a small chunk or teo of LR.
IMO live sand is a waste of money. How anything can be alive in a sealed bag exposed to cold temps with no food or oxygen is beyond me
