I've just changed from gravel to sand in one of my tanks and was wondering what is a safe level to put in. I've heard about toxins building up. I've currently got it at roughly 1 inch in the middle going to about half inch at the sides. I'm also going to make this a planted tank with co2.

thanks guys.

2 inches or so should be fine. The "toxins" are not really a problem. They really are a noxious gas but like air wands, the bubbles break at the surface and smell bad if you happen to get a whiff. They don't harm the fish. I get them from time to time in my shelldweller tank and haven't lost any yet.
