Am I destined for trouble with a sand substrate and a HOB filter? I read a thread that brought to my attention the possibility of sand ruining my impeller. I have an empty 29 gallon tank and I bought a new Aquaclear 50 filter. No money for an external. Okay well I have the money but I have to be able to live in my house with my wife

Anway, is my filter doomed?

I'm thinking 7 leopard cories, and two shoals of tetras or rasboras.

I have the same size tank and the same filter. No problem here. Can't say for in the long run as mine is fairly new. Let the sand completely settle before putting the filter on. Also may want to use just the first extension tube as with the other one on it will be closer to the bottom of the tank.

I;ve never had anything but HOBs on my 29 gallon with sand substrate. Never had any problems. You just don't want your intake too close to the sand. Mine is about 2 or 3 inches about it. This is a Whisper 60 so it has plenty of pull.

If you buy a replacement sponge for sponge filter and slip it over the intake that will stop any sand being sucked in. You will have to sew up the hole in the end though. It works great. I use them all the time. Just make sure to keep it clean so it doesn't get bogged down. It also will up the area for good bacteria and allows you to use less filter material. :good:

Good idea IceeGrl

Wolf,

I have 8 purple Danios and am adding 2 Bolivian Rams and some Corys

Thanks everyone. My basement renovation should be done on Monday. Hopefully my tank will be setup and running with mature media a day or two later. :good:
