Im thinking of having a couple balloon mollys and a school of some kind of tetras (probably diamond tetras). should i add some aquarium salt? if so, how much?

There is some debate about whether mollies need salt in their water. I tend towards the "No" campaign on that one.

There is no debate, as far as I'm aware, about whether tetras need salt. They don't, they are freshwater fish.

I'll say no, Don't see any reasons to add it all the time.

Mollies don't really need salt & the tetras certainly won't like it, so my answer is no

I can see a consensus forming......

in my opinion salt should never be used on a regular basis in any freshwater tank,

only when treating a wound or infection

and even this should be performed in a hospital tank

Lol I think I know my answer now. Thanks everyone! :)

Well, mollies can live in full fresh or full salt. Some salties use them for fish-in cycling, or they used to.

Most fw fish do not need any salt in their water. Many dislike it. But There are always exceptions. The rift lake cichlids need it. Check out the recipes for making "cichlid buffers" http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/buffer_recipe.php

However, the best information on the whole salt in fw issue is in this article. http://www.thepufferforum.com/forum/library/water-filtration/thesaltoftheearth/
