Hi all,

I've started cycling my 180ltr tank with 9.5% ammonia and everything seems to be going to plan but it's early days. I saw Tetra Safestart on ebay and wondered if anyone had any experience of using it? I did a search but it only brought up a few threads from back in July 2006, which is when I presume it was launched but couldn't really establish whether it was worth using or not. I guess from the lack of threads that it probably isn't but I just thought I would ask.

Cheers.

IMHO
it is worth it, it is not as good as bactinettes but still one of the few products on the market that does what is says on the bottle.

i tested it on a 60 litre tank, plugged the tank in added water +conditioner, waited 24 hours, added safe start waited 24 hours filled with fish, that was about 2 - 3 months ago and i havent had a problem....yet

Does anyone know if it speeds up cycling or should it be used on it's own? There doesn't seem to be much information there on it and if it is such a wonder product, why isn't everyone using it? Has PFK or such like tested it and published the results?

waste of money in my opinion, i did an experiement with it a few months ago made no difference

do things the natural way and save that money

my arguement against these so called "bacteria" or "cycle" products is that i am sure they work in the laboratory but not necessarily in the average home aquarium

"does what it says on the bottle" maybe for you, not for me mate, had a "control" tank cycling without "safe" start and everything, it did NOTHING, NOTHING

I wouldn't feel comfortable buying something that encourages people to put fish straight into a new tank. There's a very interesting article in PFK about it (Nov. edition, IIRC). Fish are still exposed to high nitrites/nitrates.
