Hi
Im giong to purchase an RO unit for my tropical fish tank to aid me in keeping my PH level down so i can keep Discus. Im told if i use RO water i will need to add additives to the water.

Any ideas what these additives are or would be?

I`ve just started using an RO unit and so far have found that a mix of 3 parts RO and 1 part tap water has brought my ph down from 7.6 to 6.8. I`ve not even looked into using just RO water as it apparently becomes more complicated due to adding all sorts.

I just add dechlorinator based on the amount of tap water I use. Hope this helps :)

Hi,
Yes, you can't use pure RO water in a tank. There does need to be some hardness to buffer the ph.

You can either use the pure RO water and add one of the Remin products. Or you can dilute the RO water with tap water. You would have to play a bit with the ratio until you are happy with the ph & hardness.

Tropic marin remineral tropic is the product you want, the RO filter removes all the heavy metals and nitrates and chlorine from the tap water, the remineral powder adds trace minerals that are good for the fish and brings the PH back up and buffers it, You add a certain amount of powder per gallon to get the desired PH, for discus you wont want as much powder as you would want for a community obviously

There is no point in using tap water to raise the PH of RO water as you are just putting heavy metals back into your tank, and the whole point of RO is to get rid of the TDS
