Removing Empty Snails

I have loads of snails and some are just shells .
 
anyone got a niffy way to sort out the live ones from the empty shells.
 
I tried putting them in a pot and then put the ones that climb up the walls back in the tank - but its takes ages and I only got a few.

What if you just put the shells up to the light? If theres a snail then you would see a dark mass, if the shell was empty you would almost see through it if you know what I mean.

Live snails will have the 'door' in place. Empty shells will have no door
