Red-tailed Bully

Hello. I just bought a red-bellied pacu that is a relatively large fish, and was bullying all the other fish in it's tank, but when I placed him in my home aquarium, my red-tail black shark was quick to show this newbie who's boss. He constantly chases and harrases this pacu, is this only temporary, or will this be commonplace?

That tank is way to small for two aggressive fish.
A red tailed shark needs a 40 gal tank.

Ok, is that the reason why the pacu is getting bullied? If I had a bigger tank, would it solvent the problem? Geese, with Christmas coming up, I think I will have to wait till the new year to get a bigger tank.

According to that article the pacu should be able to deal with the shark, but the tank is to small for the both of them, it could turn nasty.


I would return the pacu to the lfs.
Research your fish before you buy them.

Definitely return the pacu. It has no place in a 28 gallon.

agreed. pacus will easily reach and exceed 2ft in length, whether or not your tank is big enough.
