Red Tail Shark Food

Do you mean a Red tail black shark?
Mine justs hovers along the surfaces of the tank cleaning up what the others missed. I dont think i have ever seen him/her scoffing a bid chunk of food come to think of it :dunno:
I feed the others lots of different types of food, Pellets, worms, dicss, crab, and vegetable.

i've seen a 180gal community tank with a group of 8 full grown Red tailed black sharks....They were quite peaceful but still something i wouldnt do given there aggression sometimes. RTB's will patrol the tank looking for flake food and anything else you feed....the only thing mine goes after is brine shrimp...he loves it. HIH

I have one RTB in a 10 gallon planted tank. He is now the only fish in that tank since he chased down and harrassed the other fish to death. He eats brine shrimp, blood worms, flakes and algae. He is very aggressive and I probably won't put any other fish in there again with him. He may not be the norm, I don't know. He does seem to miss the other fish but I don't want to abuse any other fish by subjecting them to his brutality. He is a beautiful fish and I have had him for some time now. I am just sad that he could not get along with his tank mates. I do hope you have better luck with yours. :alien:

Red tail sharks require a tank of about 30gal and will be very territorial even in that at times. Yours was attacking other fish because of a lack of space and proper territory for him. Heavily planted tanks with plenty of cover is usually the best for them.

Red Tailed Sharks are omnivorous, some vegetable matter is required in their diet as well as more meatier foods like bloodworms. They will except most foods ranging from commercailly prepared flakes to live foods. Sometimes they will also graze on algae. :)

So you cannot keep more than one of these? Evenm in a tank of 100g, with lots of defined territories?
You can keep one per 30 gallons provided you heavily plant the tank and allow for territory space. Sometimes though you get one that is just a territory pig and will be more aggressive than normal.

Yeah, i wouldnt exceed 1 per tank. They are very aggresive towards fish of there own species. Maybe the 8 you saw in a tank were a different type of shark, because i dont think that many are capable of living together harmounously.

One per tank. And yeah, theyll eat just about anything. Mine loved bloodworm.

I thought you needed a minimum of 50 gallons for a RTBS?
Nope, they get to about 6 inches at most and can do suitably fine in a 30 with a few other fish that are not competition to them.

As to other sharks, the only other one I can think of is the Rainbow which IIRC is even more aggressive than Red Tails.

Several yrs ago, i kept a community tank, and i had one rainbow and one RTBS.

The RTBS was the aggresor of the two. Eventually i sold both and now i have a planted tank. Anyways, my RTBS was aggresive one and my rainbow wasnt. Maybe the RTBS kept the rainbow's aggression undr his thumb! lol.

I reckon you could have one of each in a tank! I did, for a yr, befoe they out grew.
