I have three Silver Dollars, one of which is a Red Hook Silver Dollar. My other Dollars are still small, but my Red Hook is about six years old and is about the size of a small plate/saucer. He's a very, skittish fish and flips out when ever someone walks by the tank, when a dog goes by tank....and sometimes it appears he flips out for no reason as there is sometimes nothing by the tank when he does it. This last time he had a fit he rammed himself pretty good on the side of the tank. I noticed afterwards that he has a sore on his nose, right above his mouth. I didn't think much of it since I know what it is from and that its not some terrible disease. The past two days I haven't seen the Red Hook eat (though I know he could be eating once I leave area). I fed them yesterday and he did eat one vegetable disc (he usually eats many more). My spouse and I were discussing since the sore is so close to his mouth that maybe it hurts him to eat, which leads me to my two questions.

Is there anyway to help speed the healing of the sore on his nose?
Our tank is already planted and has lots of hiding places, but is there anyway to help calm him down so he doesn't have panic attacks as much?

Yes Melefix is good to add and it will not harm your bio-filter. Fish can go for long periods of time without eating, so don't worry just yet about it eating. Not eating like you said is most likely from the injury or trauma from the whole experience. As for calming down, has it been skittish the entire 6 years of life? If so there is little you can do to remeady this trait. My only suggestion would be to break his line of sight and smooth out any vibrations some how. What do you use for a stand?

Yeah, he's been pretty skittish since we got him. The stand is made of wrought iron and isn't solid. It's built much like a wroght iron fence except its been turned into a stand.

Yeah those tend to sway a bit more and cause vibrations. Someday you should switch to a good wooden stand, that should help a little.
