Real Plants

I am thinking about adding real plants to my tank. Mostly amazon swords. How do u care for real plants, could real plants be healthy if their was gravel substrate. Can i just place the plants into the gravel and then not have to worry about them? Would chemicals for fish harm the fish? thanx
