well i do partial water changes, siphon off a few bucket fulls of water i use a gravel cleaner gadget thing to do both jobs clean the sand and siphon off the water rinse out the filter medium in the buckets befor i chuck it on the plants in the garden, then 3/4 refill the buckets with cold adding the apropriate amount of dechlorinator to each bucket fill it up with boiling water from the kettle mix around and stick the themometer in mine usualy is near as spot on to the temp of the water i took out and just refill the tank!
or when i do a big change, i have a big plastic tub.........the ones you chuck kids toys in fill it with the tank water, spend ages chasing the fish with a net and place your heater in with it to keep the temp up then when they are out you can co on your merry way. Do not use detergents or any equipment sponges etc that have been anywhere near it i use scrubby sponges that dont scratch glass and a dish brush to get the hard to reach bits off, dont clean your sand as in taking it out and washing it under a tap as it contains benificial bacteria that helps the eco system you are trying to establish.
Im sure some one is going to have my guts for garters over me useing the hot water from a kettle but thats what my lfs told me to do and ive had my tank up and running for 3 years with no deaths or heater disasters or diseases etc,ive got more baby mollies than i can shake a stick at too :X i can keep my fish alive and well its the plants i cant keep lol
im sure some one will be able to guide you in a way you feel comfortable with, this forum is a mine of information with the human touch we have all been there done that made mistakes and had happy endings we did or didnt expect .
