Bought a few plants last week, Amazon sword mainly. The plants came planted with black pots. The black pots had vertical holes in them for water. They told me to stick it in the tank with the pot. I did, will this cause any harm???

i take the pots off. who wants ugly black pots in their tank?

it won't cause any serious trouble, but the plants would prefer to have free space for their roots to spread.

If small tank leave them on. Slows growth, easy to move for cleaning reasons, or just cause you want to.

Big tank take them off. More roots mean more leafs.

If they have dirt in the pots rinse the roots off first befor placing into the tank.

:) remove the pots... your plants will grow better :) Trim the roots until you have about 1-2 inches then plant in the substrate being carefull not to bury the crown( the bit where the leaves grow from)....feed by pushing plant food tabs in around the roots.

If you have a rabbit or a friend with a rabbit you have access to the best free plant food around...push a couple of rabbit droppings around the roots about once a month :D

I would advise leaving the pots on for a week or so, until they get used to the new water conditions.
Also, the material in the pot will contain a lot of nutrients which will be helpful while the plants get acclimatised.

Edited to say: Its not greatly nessesary to use fertilisers or root tabs for atleast a month, as the plants will tend to feed off their own stored nutrients.

ok thanks for the info..
When i bought my plants they sold me a bottle of "Plant Gro" made by Nutrafin. it says Iron enriched Aquatic plant fertilizer. ITs liquid the lfs told me to use it once a week. They said just dump it right in the water. Is this stuff good or no?

:) that stuff is good only if you have floating plants or cut and come again plants like hygrophilia... If it has a vigorous root system then it needs root tabs....if it has very few roots then it needs liquid fertilizer.

Try it once a month to begin with a s you will have an algae problem if you add too much.... if you notice the plants looking a bit less healthy then add once every 2 weeks. Regular water changes will replace many of the nutrients your plants need to grow and your fish will also add their own nutrients for the plants :D
