I've seen posts about java moss walls, what about a java moss carpet?
It could work the same way, but would it be advisable to cover up the substrate?
The only reason I'm asking is to show you how stoopid my LFS employees are.
Awhile back this guy told me that if I "carpet" my substrate I would never have to vacuum it.
today he tells me that if I carpet the bottom of my tank "you wont be able to do a gravel cleaning" he says.
Anyways, just thought I'd rant.

BTW...When I need to do a gravel cleaning, I'll lift the java moss out with the sheet of nylon mesh its anchored to.

Anyone think that this actually may be a problem?
Would like some feedback about it.

should be fine. it's the same in theory to a riccia carpet. just make sure you give the gravel under the mesh a good prod right to the bottom to prevent gas build up.

when you say give it a good prod, do you mean before i lay the java moss carpet down, or every now and again after its in the tank?

yea, thats pretty much what I planed on doing.
I'm also gettin some riccia soon, should be here in the next few days.
Have any suggestions on what I could use to anchor it down?
I have quite a bit of mopani, but I dont really want to cover it up.
What about peices of slate?
I have a ton of it, its been boiled so it should be good to go.
What do ya think?

Cool, I have lotsa hairnets (I used to run a fast food franchise, took all I could when I left :grr: )

I used them In my guppy tank to hold down javamoss.

but what I meant was, what did you put your riccia on, or did you simply lay it there with the hairnet holding it down?

BTW...nice tanks again!

literally get a piece of slate. lay riccia on top, pull a hairnet over the lot and ite it tightly underneath the slate. the riccia will then grow through the netting to conceal the hairnet after about 2 weeks.
