Okay, so at the moment my spawning tank is filled up because we weren't gonna breed yet, but as the fish look ready (eventually) we're going to lower the water level as it has to cycle for two weeks, anyway. I think? Anyway, our heater won't work with that, how do we get around that? By the way, it's a ten gallon tank.

I believe it's 50watt, but my dad says it won't work when the water is reduced to six inches. My mom suggested putting it in a jar and then putting the jar in the tank and turning the heater on... would this be bad? :/

Hmm, well I used a 50 watt heater on my spawn tank and it worked fine. :) Maybe you can just set it up in 5 gallons of water (since you said there's fish in the tank that you'll be using) with a thermometer for a couple days to see if it works alright?

I don't have a five gallon. :/ Petsmart only sells it with kits, I could buy it just plain but they only sell 10+ plain tanks.

I don't necessarily mean a 5 gallon tank, but just any container that holds 5 gallons of water. Just a rubbermaid container or something.

if it's submersible then you can turn it sideways, it doesn't hae to be upright. it will work even if the only thing coming out of the water is the wire.
