I am concidering a quarantine tank for new fish but was wondering how to set one up as I don't want it running all the time. I just want to use it for new fish or if one get ill. I can get a small fully eqiped thing for about £40 but just want to check on the setting up. I take it I use my same tank water and then let the tank cycle when I buy the new fish? Will this not stress new fish out even more? Will this be then the same problem if the fish become ill? If someone can give me help I would be grateful as I do want a separate quantine tank but only if it will work and I don't end up creating a small Abattoir/ death chamber

Cheers

Easiest way is to either:

put extra filter media in your main tank filter and then use that in your quar. tank filter when you need it - that way its always got beneficial bacteria.

or

place your filter (if its a small HOB type) in your main tank and keep it there

I am sure that those more experienced will give you some good tips
but if you have some filter media in your main tank that you can take out for the quaranteen tank filter and you use water from the other tank then it could be ready to go quickly. What do others think?
I solved the problem by accident because I added a betta to my community tank and that didn't work so he now lives in a seperate tank and I use that as the quaranteen. If he harasses the quaranteen fish then he goes in a large breeding section in the tank. I guess there is always the danger of him picking up something from a new fish but it hasn't happened yet and better that than the whole community tank.

cheers for that I will just run the filter in my main tank or even the filter alongside my main filter. Cheers
