I also heard they like snails. Is this a must an if so how many snails should you have before putting the puffers in.What do they eat.How many could i stock in a ten gallon tank.

Puffers need to eat snails to keep there beaks filed down as they grow continuously, but they will eat almost any other live foods and meaty foods like cockles and mussels.
Im not sure on how many you could keep in a 10g but i would imagine 3 or 4 would be about it as they can be territorial.

Are puffers schooling fish or are they OK on their own or in a pair?

Dwarf Puffer facts.

Sorry, that's all I can do is give a link. I've never had them...yet. :)

pufferpack said I could keep 1 male with 3 females in a 10g. So I'm assuming more than 1 male would be hectic and I've heard that females will sometimes tangle. But I don't think they are schooling fish.

For the most part they are not schooling fish. I like to keep the smaller ones in little packs, but make sure I provide lots of hiding spots for them becaust both males and females can get pretty territorial. I presently have 8 Dwarf puffers and 3 South American puffers (the mellowest of the puffers) in a 35 gal tank. They don't school but often group up in 3's and 4's for short periods. They are fine in singles and pairs, sometimes you get one that is too aggressive to keep with any other fish and must live solitary.

As CFC mentioned snails are a must, I supply about 50 small pond snails every couple of weeks to my little guys. Other than snails you could use cockles and muscles in the shell for some species (I think the shells might be too large for the dwarfs to break open). Live, or frozen live food is about all most puffers will eat, but occasionaly one will take a likeing to flakes or freeze dried, but it is rare.
For a 10 gal tank 3 or 4 Dwarfs would work, or 2 South Americans should be Ok.
