pruning my plants...

If its a steam plant (eg all the leaves are attached to one stem) then trim just above a 'node' - thats where the leaves are growing from.

If each leaf comes from the floor via a steam of its own - trin it as close to the floor as you dare.

At times I have to trim quite a few leaves because of m,y fishes' appetites. Never able to get to the base because they are always tangled (aponogeton) and I can't figure out which leaf has which stem. Have any ideas how?

lol - I normally employ the cut and float method...

I cut and if it floats away it was the right one... if not i repeat until it is :D

slightly less comical method is getting your arms wet with a pair of sissors :/

I'll get lorna to take a few pictures of me up to my shoulders in fish tank while trimming the tank tomorrow - you'll find it comical!

I've been there. The problem with me is that I constantly scrape my arms against the sides. It's over 2 feet deep (fortunately on the ground), so it's difficult to keep from getting angry when the plants don't cooperate.
