Everyone is always pointing that fullspectrum lights is a must ( like me ) but here is a look at a great looking tank that is running on cool white and GE plant/aquarium bulbs. I dont want people to think that you could run a planted tank on cool white bulds alone, but would like to point out that they could add some watts to get the extra light you'll need to get a higher watts per gallon.

also note that the tank is running close to 5 watts per gallon

look at this tank,

its runs on Approx. 50 Watts cool white and GE plant/aquarium bulbs.

Hey Silly_Me,

I saw that same tank on the website you are referring to. In fact, there appear to be a few tanks in that showcase which use cool whites as part of the light repertoire.

A little while ago I was browsing on thekrib's forum archive and stumbled onto multiple threads all providing evidence for "enough light" being much more important that "the right light".

Here is one link. This is another one.

Contained therein is the statement:
In 1982 Philips Corp. did a lot of experiments in order to find out the effects of different light colours on aquarium plants....The surprising results were that the influence of colour was less than 10 percent!

Finally, that same gardener's other tank from 2000 shown here uses the same light setup and shows off a beautiful, beautiful lawn of pearling riccia and healthy glosso at about 8 watts per gallon!
