My otos will be here soon and although i have a substantial amount of the soft green algae and some amount of brown i want more. What would be the easiest way to grow the "right" kind of algae outside of the tank? I was thinking about putting a few rocks in a glass container filled with water in the sunlight but will i just end up with a mess of nasty stuff growing in there or the correct kind of algae?

drift wood iron supplment and smooth or semi smooth rocks and will grow faster than you think

The soft green algae is most likely blue green algae and otos (no fish or invert for that matter) won't touch it. Be very careful trying to "grow" algae as you may get a type that they won't eat and then you've got a major problem. If you put water in sunlight, all you will get is blue green algae. There are no algae eaters that I am aware of that will eat that mess.

I won't have problem as i am not going to try and grow more algae in the tank but on rocks and such in a separate container. I will then place one at a time in the tank for the otos and others to eat, then swap it out for another. It isn't BGA just the dusty kind that seems to accumulate over time on certain spots of the tank, such as the glass close to the lights.
