Hello,

My current pH (out of the tap) is somewhere between 6.8 and 7.0. My tank is new, only two days into cycling. Will my pH go up or down during this process? Once cycled, what is the best pH for my freshwater fish, assuming the typical community tank, or possibly gouramis and rams? I'm fish cycling with just a few small fish (5 feeder danios, no loss yet, appear happy and active) as I simply could not find ammonia without suficants in my area for fishless cycling. I went to no less than ten different stores, no luck. I changed 20% water this evening (first time since filling on Saturday), my ammonia has not gone above 0.15 and nitrite is 0.05. 29 U.S gallons. Temp is 76, water is nearly clear. I added this extra info just to let you know what I'm doing. But the primary question is about proper pH.

Kind Regards,

Steve

It depends on what type of fish you are wanting to keep but overall the ideal Ph is 7.0. Your lucky your tap water is around that mine reads of the charts but when its in my tank its between 7.6 and 7.8. :good:

urine (your pee pee) is natural ammonia, sounds really stupid i know. BUT IT WORKS :hyper:

your quite lucky your water is so neutral. like what erk628 said depends on the fish you want to keep

You pH is just right for the fish you have and the ones you are looking at. The temperature should be right at 78F for those fish. The pH should stay right around where it is now unless you heavily overstock the tank and then do no water changes. Fish wastes after they are broken down by bacteria can cause the pH to drop if the water is not changed

Not always true, like I said above my PH reads off the charts out of the tap but when its in my tank its around 7.6 and 7.8. All I add to it is dechlorifier. All though you could be right because I have heard that to get your taps true ph you should let it set in a bucket for a day then test it. Either way just want Terra to know that your PH may be different when its in your tank so don't be suprised. :good:

Thanks for the replies! As for my own urine thing, I do believe my wife would have me commited if she saw me standing on a chair peeing in my fish tank.
