Depends on the fish. some fish are live bearing, meaning the eggs were fertilized within the mother, and the fry are born alive and free swimming. The live bearing fish consist of guppys, platys, swordtails, mollys, endlers, and a variety of uncommon species such as the halfbeaks. Other fish like bettas utilize external fertilization, meaning the female lays the eggs into the water, and the male fertilizes them there after. from this point the eggs will develop and hatch in the water either with or without parental care.
Thats bettas and guppys for ya. There are many species of fish and they all have their own breeding habits. You can find more information on specific fish by going into the archived fish index board at the top of the board list. That should have all of the more common species listed, as well as how they breed.
