 bit concerned regarding my external filter as had about 4 quite bad power surges in the last hour, as first time using external filter, if the surge is bad enough to stop my filter, (as at min power flicking off then on again,)will i end up with water every where or will it stay in pipes and canister? also wat will happen if the power goes out? as i wouldn't be surprised if it did tonight? :-( i dont really want water every where, so please help to reasure me?? lol

we are having power surges too! lets hope you dont wake up to the living room being flooded lol. hope the power doesnt go off - fish wont be too happy me thinks!

Power surges are nasty, as they can damage your equipment. It's much preferable to have a power cut out of the two! If you do lose power, then the water should stay in the canister and tubes, especially if it's a fairly recent design.

The RCD tripped on my aquarium once. Unfortuantly, I was on holiday, and the mother in law didn't notice. 4 days later, we come back, and I turn it back on. No losses, just a bit of a Ammonia spike and a lot of cold fish. Easily looked after.

A surge protector would protect your equipment. They have 'fuse' inside that will blow due to overvoltage (the surge) protecting your equipment. You do have to check that it has not blown from time to time.

Argos sell these, so should be quite easy to get hold off.

You can get extension leads with power surge protection built in from places like Argos. Or if you have a little more money you could get yourself a computer UPS like I did, which can be used for your aquarium equipment instead of a PC, and will not only protect against surges but give you some protection against a power cut by keeping your pump etc working. :good:
