Poor Tuna

I agree it's sad that they're being fished to the point of extinction, however Tuna's have always been caught as a source of food.

How can you in all conscience say that? normally i would accept peoples different views and not argue, but i am disgusted with you! Just because we have always fished them does NOT mean we have the right to fish a species out of existence! Humans ARE NOT THE BE ALL AND END ALL ON THIS PLANET
i am a big fan of tuna especially fresh, but i will be avoiding it for the foreseeable future having read this article. and did you even read all of it? it says that:-
Even from a commercial point of view, it appears to make no sense.
Iccat scientists believe that if catches were halved now, the stock would rebound, allowing fleets to catch almost as much as they have ever done, and do so sustainably, ensuring an income for the foreseeable future.
so if people are sensible about it now we can avoid the problem. the suggestion is not to stop fishing tuna altogether, merely to reduce it!
Its people like you that cause the problem, if everyone says "oh what a shame, never mind, tunas always been fished for food" nothing will change, until the tuna has been fished out of existence, :-( and then there will be NO MORE tuna EVER!

Sorry rant over, just got a little worked up there.

It's the same warning we've been hearing about cod in the north and nobody's listened to that either. Much as it might upset some of you I'm a keen angler and have been for years and I have personally noticed a decline in the number of fish caught from around our coast. It sickens me to know that much of it is wasted, thrown over the side because of limits or dumped into landfills. Maybe one day we'll learn.

personally i don't think there is anything wrong with angling, although i'm sure there are many who would disagree with me. i'd love to go out and catch fresh fish for my meals, rather than relying on however old stuff from supermarkets. its not from people going out and catching a few fish for personal use that causes the problems. in my experience a lot of the people who hunt or fish for food have a lot of respect for the animals they are eating and for the environment they live in. Its when its all for profit that it becomes a problem, the money is all that matters mentality.

Sad and frustrating to read about, but does it really come as a surprise anymore?
So long as greed governs the minds of men, nothing will ever change until it's too late.

the article is about bluefin tuna, so does that mean yellowfin tuna is still acceptable to eat? or are they endangered too? does anyone know?

I think Yellowfin tuna are the kind that dolphins use as "hunting dogs" and therefor hang around in their schools so they're not dolphin safe.

I think that we should make some in-land fisheries, and grow mass amounts of tuna in there being fed of thier natural diet, and then released at a certain size, so then i population starts to go up and everyone is happy.

Sorry to say, but there are other animals out there that are endangered and deserve more attention. Things such as the horned owl are being threatened right now due to deforestation. Human's have always killed things off to better their own chance of survival.

Sorry, but it really annoys me when somebody becomes to disgusted with me because I say that human's have always done things to better their own chances.

Disptie the fact that it is not within our right to kill off a species, nothing can truly be done. Dodo's for instance were killed off, many other species aswell, human's have always been responsible, we'll eventually learn from our mistakes however when a species is threatened due to over fishing, deforestation, etc, and we're so concerened dispite the fact that Pandas are endagered (only about 400 left in the world) as are the North-American Right Whales (about 150 left), we should really refocus our thoughts.

that a ridiculous statement. i never said that we should ignore the other endangered species! what you seem to be saying is that because its something that benefits us it doesn't matter. and if everyone says nothing can be done, then your right nothing will change. but if people stopped buying bluefin tuna completely then the market would disappear and there would be no profit for the fishers. and you say nothing can be done? AGAIN i quote

this is SOMETHING THAT CAN BE DONE. so rather than just spouting platitudes why don't you get your facts straight, especially when it has been pointed out to you several times already. Also you say we will learn from our mistakes? well that takes people willing to change and as long as there are people like you out there saying it doesn't matter and humans come first we are not going to.
Sorry, but it really annoys me when somebody becomes to disgusted with me because I say that human's have always done things to better their own chances.
just because humans have always done something does not make it right. when there was less fishing going on it was a sustainable practice, before long there is going to be nothing left on this planet to sustain life, we justify our excesses by saying its for the good of mankind, but when all the fish have been fished out of existence and all the forests have been chopped down, the world and the people living in it will suffer terribly. its all just excuses.

Now on a different note
I think Yellowfin tuna are the kind that dolphins use as "hunting dogs" and therefor hang around in their schools so they're not dolphin safe.
But what about line caught? i thought those were dolphin safe? my local supermarket sells line caught yellowfin tuna, but i don't want to buy it if its an endangered species.
