My albino cory has been swimming around like a normal fish recently. It also regularly goes up to the surface as if for air, but stays there like its trying to jump out of the top of the tank (sort of like sturgeon do). It has also developed red marks that look like blood all over its body, and its skin (or... whatever it is) appears to be peeling off or shedding. It is totally left alone in the tank (in a 10 gallon with 2 black skirt tetras and 8 endlers). It seems to have started since the endlers were added. Before the red marks developed it looked like it was shoaling with the endlers.

I love my cory to bits and any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Hi cybergoldfish :)

Yes, your cory has a case of bacterial infection, and from the sound of it, it's in the advanced stages. You must act quickly to save its life.

First, do a big water change and vacuum the bottom of the tank. Replace at least 50% of the water while you are doing this. Then use Myxazin or Interpet's Anti-Finrot and Fungus medicine according to the directions on the package.

I would also recommend keeping the temperature at no higher than 24 degrees C. and adding an airstone to increase the oxygen content of the water, if you do not have excellent water movement at the top of the tank. Keep a close eye on the other fish to be sure they do not come down with it too.

Good luck. I hope he recovers soon.

Thanks Inchworm :) I did a 50% water change and added myxazin. I've got a sponge filter, so there's a lot of surface movement from that.
