I have not been able to identify a problem causing my platys’ fins and heads to rot.
The first incident was a just after Christmas when I arrived home from a holiday to find it with a rotted tail. It died the next day.
The second incident was a couple of months later with a platy that was gasping by the filter output for many days before it developed a small white spot on it’s tail. This spot grew over a matter of weeks and eventually consumed almost all of the tail. It would sit at the bottom and not move so I euthanised it. While this was happening it was suggested on another thread that it could be columbaria bacteria. I did a full course of waterlife myxazin but it did nothing.
A couple of weeks later, another platy was developing a white spot on it’s head. It grew and the platy spent most of it’s time sat on the bottom. I was told to move the fish to a quarantine tank, which I did. This is a small 20 litre quarantine tank which I started at 2 tbsp of salt before a few days later increasing is to 4. This didn’t make any difference and the platy continued to develop a large crater on its head. Near the end of it’s life in the quarantine tank, it gave birth. Most of these babies are still alive right now after about 3 or 4 weeks since they were born. The platy with the rotting head also began to develop a small white spot on it’s tail, the same as the first platy. I never let this get too bad though and decided to euthanise it as it looked quite distressed.
Now a few weeks after that, in my main tank there is another platy developing a white spot on it’s tail and gasping at the surface, just like the first platy.
I am very confused as to what this could be. I will attach pictures in order of these occurrences. I have tried using salt a few times in my main tank as well but it never gave the fish any improvements. Thank you for reading this and I would love to know what you think this could be.

I'm sorry for what you are going trough... It's the part, nobodies like...

From your description you probably have more than one culprit to produce these symptoms.

I'm not a vet by any means, but would be very curious to have more details on your tank ( size / volume / filtration / water quality / maintenance / a picture of the whole thing ) Excluding water quality as a stressing factor.

How exactly you proceeded with myxazin with quantities, delays and everything else... I think it was a good choice and I'm really into trying to understand why it didn't have any beneficial effect at any levels.

Columnaris or a parasitic infection comes to my mind has an enabler for further bacterial or fungal spread.

The one on picture 4 shows sign of gill deterioration. that could be from some parasite infection.

Thanks for the response MaloK. It is 120cm x 39cm x 59cm. Around 250l. I use a Fluval 407 and throughout this time period there have been no water quality issues. I do a 50 percent water change once a week, vacuuming the sand and clean the filter every 1 and 1/2 - 2 months. I will attach a picture.
I have lemon tetras, boesemani rainbowfish and guppies with them

Ok, thanks... Now explain exactly how you used myxazin.

I can't quite remember but I imagine I just did what is said on the bottle which is about 7.5ml for my tank. Could I try another course now that it has been a while since the last?

One of the difficulties is to asses "theoretically" how much of the medicine will get wasted...

To explain simply with exaggerations. Depending on the current bioload, what is targeted, the impact of the product can vary a lot because it is absorbed by something else.

Some meds will need to nearly overwhelm the environment to become effective at the target.

Your tank looks pretty clean, While it has obvious preponderant, How old is your setup ?

I'm going to check out myxazin properties, dosing and capabilities then come back at you.

Ok, from I'm able to understand myxazin could be effective in early stage of Columnaris, but there's resistant strains and might not be strong enough.

A mix of Kanamycin and Nitrofurazone is often used in more serious infection, I see you're in the UK, getting your hand on such medicine could be difficult. but if you can get a hold on Seachem KanaPlex or AquaLife Kanamycin Sulfate and API Furan-2 or Koi Nitro... I can see that Koi nitro is available for you. But cant find anything with Kanamycin. API E.M. Erythromycin or Mardel Maracyn 2 could be a replacement...

While it's generally safe to use these in combination Kana + Nitro, make sure that these no trace left of myxazin in the tank if you attempt treating with any of these.

Buying any antibiotic in the UK requires a prescription, and it would likely cost more than the fish are worth to get a vet's prescription, assuming a vet willing to prescribe for fish can be found.

Sometimes Amazon and eBay list US antibiotics but they have to be imported which takes a fair time to arrive, and assuming customs don't confiscate them.

Yes I have been looking online and all of the medicines had to be imported. The Koi nitro was available on amazon for £50 in only one quantity and that was the only place I could find it. I could also see that on eBay you could get seachem kanaplex imported from the US for about £20 total. I could not find any other others listed available anywhere online. Are there any other ways that I could fix this issue? It is a shame that they are so difficult to get a hold of in this country.
