i seem to have a problem with my platys, for a year ive had them no problem, lots of babies always healthy, now last week a male died then a female. this week a female is showing the same symptoms and is, i think about to die.

symptoms - sunken stomach, listless, not moving much, hovering in a dark corner. if you get the food out they come and eat then go back to their corner. whatever it is kills fast. from first signs (sunken belly) to death is 48 hours.

i thought it may be internal parasites so treated for that last week. seems it did no good.
3 weeks ago the tank (whole tank) was treated for whitespot. could it be something to do with that?

whatever it is i really need to cath it quickly incase it spreads to the rest of the tank. theres a lot of fish in there!

It could be fungal disease or bacterial - or a bit of both as stress of having a fungal disease can cause bacterial disease.

What parasite meds did you use recently?

I was going to suggest using Protozin - but I guess you would have already used that or something similar when treating for the whitespot. Protozin also treats fungal infections. But if you've already tried that and the fish is still ill then maybe it's moved on to bacterial.

Myxazin is a good treatment for bacterial problems.

ps - don't forget to do a good gravel vacuum with your next water change.

What med did you use for internal parasites.
You have to retreat with some internal parasites if there egg layers.
What does it look like when the fish go to the toilet.
Is there anus enlarged or red and inflamed.

Sorry both replyed at same time.

meds were esha exit combined with esha 2000. they are the only meds really available where i live, we dont get protozin over here :)

normal fishy poo, not stringy or white. sometimes a bit red depending on the food they get. no inflamation around the anus. just a sunken belly which makes it look a bit like the fish is bending downwards.

the fish were moved from a 200L to a 500L aquarium last week. the male died the day of the move (he showed symptoms in the old tank and died 2 hours after the move into the large tank) brand new sand so no egg infected gravel could have been moved over?

What does esha exit treat as never heard of it before.
Sunken in bellys can be internal parasites to bacterial.

taken from the esha site

"Exit is an effective treatment against all 'Spot' (lch) diseases. Exit also cures Velvet.

• Acts fast against Whitespot and other parasites.
• Safe for use with sensitive tropical fish.
• Treats 2000 litres / 530 US gallons / 440 UK gallons.

Exit can be used in combination with eSHa 2000 - Fungus, Finrot Bacteria Treatment. This combination provides you with a broadly effective tool to treat most diseases your fish will encounter.

eSHa 2000's wide range action treat over 18 symptoms and disease organisms.
eSHa 2000 treats a wide range of fungal, bacterial and parasitic infections, helps heal wounds and protects the skin layer. Use eSHa 2000 for Fungus, Dropsy, bacteria, skin problems, gill problems, fin rot, tail rot, ulcers and wounds. Also for Neon Tetra disease and many others."

edit - oh gosh just reading that properely, that doesnt sound to me like it was for INTERNAL parasites. i think i cocked up here.....jesus *slaps self around head*
