i have a pregnant platy. i bought it about 3 months ago at the store so it wasn't pregnant when i bought it. i noticed sometimes that one of my guppies always followed around this particular platy. My question is, can platys and guppies mate? I dont see any other explanation to explain how this fish got pregnant. any help would be appreciated.

a fish can carry sperm for up to three months someone here told me this and people here are [retty smart I havent lost a fish yet since I found this forum and I trust everything that they tell me pm cm or les gerber they can tell you for sure but I think she has carried sperm eggs inside of her for a while because I know they dont cross breed.

Flyhockey,
Fishkeeper is right on the money, Livebearers like guppies, platys and swordfish can carry sperm up to three months. She may have been pregnat before now and never really showed. My Platys didnt startgetting big till the last round of fry.
As far as breeding, guppies and platys do not cross. Some cases of platys and swords crossing do happen but usually they stick to thier own spieces.
Do you have other platys in the tank also???? One of them may be the father, its always a possibility.

no i only have one platy in the tank. So if guppies and platys absolutely dont crossbreed then i it must have been carrying the sperm since i bought it from the store. Last night i put it in a net breeder because there was a little white protrusion coming out of the anal area. I woke up this morning and now the little white bump is gone but i dont see any fry. How many fry are usually in one "litter"?

Is the fish gravid? ie Does it have a black spot near the anal fin?

Also, if a fish is put too early into a breeding trap, then this in itself can stress out the mother causing her to ingest the fry.

there is no black spot near the anal fin. i dont know what its goin on with this fish. this is my first experience with anything being pregnant other than snails! the fish isnt so fat anymore and the white lump has gone away. can a mother eat all of her fry? if so, then maybe she gave birth when i was sleeping last night and ate all of her fry also. :hyper:

how do u know if you put the mother in the net breeder too early? there was a white lump near the anal area so i assumed that it was very close to giving birth.

You have to watch her when she starts staying in one place all the time the only time she will move is to eat then you will know its not going to be no more than a few hours until she has her babies and yes they will eat thier fry to I had a mollie ate all of her babies but two. I think the guppies are worse to eat them than the mollies.
