I've just finished doing a water change and I have just noticed that 2 of my live plants ( hornwort and amazon sword) are giving off a fine stream of bubbles, I can't say that I have noticed this before. Is this the norm? :S

Your plants are pearling, normal after a w/c...

There's a thread on this page about the very same thing.

This is perfectly normal. This is the excess oxygen being released by the plants.

The aim is to get them to do this normally (called pearling) as this indicates a healthy plant :)

What in the water change make it happen then, but not all the time??
Some tap water has high concentrations of CO2 levels I believe. I get more pealring just after a water change even though the majority of the new water is RO. Although I think the higher pearling rate might also be a consequence of adding new fertilisers.

I think its due to the extra air that dissolved in the tap water. You can see this when you fill a bucket of water from the tap, you can see bubbles forming on the sides of the bucket.

This concentration of air causes the oxygen from the plants to form out as bubbles instead of dissolving in the water.

Where does the extra air in the tapwater come from? There are a lot of theories about compression of water as it is forced down the pipes, etc. :) Probably the very act of pouring the water may cause it to collect more air?

By this theory, tap water which has been left standing for a day should cause less pearling. Has anyone tried to check if this is the case?

I have lost fish for that reason...

I live on a farm/plot and use well water, and I cant do more than a 25% water change unless I let the water stand overnight.. It looks like the fish gets the bends

gf225 is the guy you wanna talk to about pearling, just look at some of these pics of his plants pearling. These pics and a few others from the forum were the first pics that introduced me to what pearling was. Hope you don't mind gf225, but here are three of your threads with pics of your plants pearling.
