Howdy, y'all. Does anybody know in what states it is legal to have a piranha, or have a website that says? Also, what do you feed them? There was a guy in the lfs today who bought some feeder guppies for his piranha, but I thought that they mostly ate stuff that falls into the water in the wild, not other fish.

they eat any and everything from what I know. I am not sure where they are legal, I live in California, and I think me typing while having a soda so close to the keyboard is illegal. Everything seems to be against the law here in the peoples republic of california... :p

Not sure where you are but I know it was illegal to keep them in Georgia (I was the only person I knew who ever had one there), Florida, anywhere south of Tennessee back about 10 yrs ago as they could winter in the mild temperatures down there. Tennessee and areas northward were ok. Not sure about the laws now but I know you can keep them legally here in Indiana. Someone caught one in a lake up here last summer but it would have never lived through the winter. As for feeding, I fed mine minnows from a fishbait store! I would take them home and watch them closely for any signs of disease and just kept them in a styrofoam cooler type shipping box with a filter as I didn't have any more tanks. Then after being sure they were ok, I would throw a couple in the tank and let them live with him until he ate them. He would also eat floating cichlid pellets at times. Its best if you can get your fish to eat a variety of different foods rather than just live or frozen food like brine, blood worms, feeders, etc. Just like our bodies theirs need variety to function properly. There just isn't enough nutrition in those foods for them!

Good luck if you get one! Mine was awesome!

It is legal here in Nebraska to keep Piranhas. The lf stores here sell them all of the time. My brother had one not too long ago...it is my picture on the left there.

i htink it might be illeagal to keep things that will survive in the local environment and are likely to dominate the natural imhabitence and over run them... i htink its got something to do with bio diversity. i htink its a bit rich coming from most any government but there you go.

Hi All

While it is legal to keep Piranahas in the UK, there are lost of cold water fish, which you need to get a licence, to keep.

It might seem strange but you need a licence to keep Raindow trout, even though they are now in almost all British waterways.

I know there ok to have in PA. A lot of the fish stores sell them. I had 1 for several years, till selling him to a friend. I fed mine feeder goldfish and treats every now and then of hot dogs and hamburger.

Here's a couple pictures of the one 1 owned.

And in supermarkets too! ;) :p So do we have to get a license to fish them?

I heard that the piranhas in the Amazon will lose the aggressiveness when taken out from the Amazon n live somewhere else. Is that true?

from what the lfs' in my area say it is illegal to own them in florida now, but you can have pacu (cousin of the piranah i believe) as they are sold everywhere down here.

Piranhas became legal here about 3 years ago i think. I live in Oregon. I don't think they can survive the winter months here, lots of rain and gets semi-cold.

From what I have heard and read about piranhas, they like to stay in a pack (shoal). They are more aggressive as a group than they are as loners. I used to shock people who visited when I had mine by putting my hand in the tank with him. They always thought he would attack it but he never did, actually, he would go to the other side of the aquarium and watch me! He did get his feeders but when you think about it, a little 1-2 inch goldfish isn't a whole lot to be afraid of when you are all of 6-8 inches or so!

this thread really sparked my curiousity, and sure enough, I was right. They are illegal in California... stupid liberals trying to protect us from ourselves.. :grr:

i live in washington and i know it is illegal to purchace or sell them here. i had three of them about a year ago that i purchaced in oregon. i know its legal to have them there. it is also legal in idaho. i kept mine with my arrowana and they didnt bother him or the catfish in the tank. i had to get rid of them though because they would always eat all the food before the arrowana could catch any. i feed them live feeders, sliced shrimp, and beef heart. they pretty much eat anything though.
