im thinking about raising piranha in the near future... if i do it will be as a hobby but i will be selling the red bellys(what ill raise) once they get about 1yr old(like 8inches) so thats what alota my questions will be about, my first one is how much are they worth once there adults... thx

RBP's are pretty plentiful where legal so I'm not exactly sure how much they would be worth as adult. You would probably be selling them as juvies tho wouldn't you? They are pretty cheap as juvies.

Here's a list of where they are legal and not in the US. Not sure where you live but this is the only Country I know about.

I don't remember the thread, but in the Oddball forum there is one that I posted in on my experiences with all the types of piranha's I've kept. I remember I made the post around or on July 27th and I believe it was in a thread someone started about piranhas.

yeah i know i seen your post, no i figured id sell them as adults, i figured 8inces is adult... if not piranha how about pacu? im wanting a carnvierious(sp?) fish to raise and sell to make some cash(100+$) ill only be having like 20-50

again depending on where you are I don't think that an adult pirhana is going to fetch 100 dollars, and on another note not many people look for an adult pirhana as it is pretty hard to find other pirhanas to go with them

If you're looking for $100 a pop then I wouldn't try either RBP's or a Pacu. They are just to easy to get and the market is flooded with them> Can you get $100 for a 8" rbp? Maybe depending on where you sell them. Like I said, I'm not sure but I would no way pay that much and would rather spend $3 for a 2" and wait 6 months. Maybe they do sell them for that but not sure.

If you want to make large amounts of $$$ breeding and selling p's, I would look into the Serrasalmus, like the Black Piranha. You can sell 10" for $300 sometimes, either way they are expensive. The drawback is they are solitary fish and a divider method would for surely have to be used in most cases. You can't put a lot of them together like you can with the Pygo's and would need more tanks and breeding is harder. This would obviously cut into your overhead.

I'm not trying to say you shouldn't do it. I hope you do as I would think it would be exciting and I'd probably even buy a Serra from you myself. I've never bred p's for selling so my knowledge is limited pertaining to this aspect of the hobby. Hopefully others will be in a better position to reply and hopefully I'm wrong here.

how long it take to raise black piranha?

allso what kinda fish can i get to live in a pack and sell for a bunch? :)

Black Piranha take a LONG time to grow to that size. 5 years or so.

Look at my list again and pretty much anything I said likes to shoal except rbp's aren't all that commonplace and might work.

Where do you live? At least what Country?

Well, if you are ever around Dayton, OH and want to see some P's my pal and I have been raising, come on down and let me know. WE got the babies at Jack's Aquariums for 5 bucks each. The adults sell there for about 40 max. They are a lot of fun though. Smart...so smart. I don't think thereis a lot of money in raising RBPs. They are all over ohio. Oh yeah, I am from the Clevo area. =)
