Hey guys I have seen a few threads which mention permanent tests in the water/tank?

Can anyone tell me what these are? where can I get them? how much are they? and are they any good?

Im guessing they are some kind of monitor which turn a certain colour depending on ammonia/nitrite/nitrate and ph?

cheers all
Stu

In a cycled tank there is no need for anything like that except in a case like BigC's where he is monitoring CO2. Ammonia and nitrite should always be 0 so there is no substitute for regular testing. Most of the inexpensive testers like that actully test for a safe range and may not even register that there is ammonia or nitite in the tank until it reaches a certain level.

I've read some reviews on products like that and to be honest they seem pretty hit or miss. Too many people have reported testing their water only to find high Ammonia when the in-tank tester read 0.

fair enough, was just a query really, im waiting for my API master kit to arrive but we have had postal strikes down here so its late turning up!!

I think they create a false sense of security, since they aren't always accurate to being with and only get worse over time.
