i ahve never seen any of my plants pearling, are they still photosynthisisng and adding oxygen to the water or not?

what makes them paerl etc. i know i need more light in my tank to be sorted 2moro will this increas the likelyhood of it happeneing?

cheers

plants always produce oxygen with lights on.
however, to have your plantsd pearl, you need to give them more of what they need to produce oxygen, which is light and co2

by adding lotsa lights and co2, your plants will produce more o2, thus the pearling

not to sound facetious but think about it: if they're still green after a week or two they MUST be photosynthesizing to stay alive right?

What is pearling?
Pearling is when you see a bubble of oxygen coming off your plants.....this is a product of photosynthesis which is where the plants use carbon dioxide and convert it to sugar and oxygen in the presence of light:

CO2 (carbon dioxide)+ H2O (water)------> C6H12O6 (sugar) + O2 (oxygen)

The sugar is what the plant cells use to grow hence you see your plants sprouting. The oxygen is what you see when your plants are pearling.

Even if you don't see pearling, provided your plants are growing and aren't dead, they will still be providing the water with oxygen (you just won't be able to see the large bubbles)....it is called pearling cause the oxygen bubble looks like a pearl!!

Not all plants will display pearling....some plants will show lots of pearling!!!

I don't know ... I have a lot of artificial plants that are "pearling" then ... Does that mean there alive ?? :-(

Perhaps it's a better indication of oxygen levels in the water ??

Pearling is as described earlier. If you are seeing bubbles on the surface of inanimate objects, they are probably coming from an agitation source, (air pump, filter return), and sticking to a film of algae or bacteria.

Another cause is water changes. When adding water form a pressurised source, (a tap for example), the dissolved gases come out of solution when the pressure is released. You can get the same effect filling a glass with tapwater and let it sit for a while. Bubbles tend to form in scratches or other irregularities on the surface of the glass.

For all of you who aren't familiar with pearling~

It could be alage pearling; some of the alage on surfaces I can't clean (Driftwood and irregular rocks) pearls frequently in my tank.
