I filter my tanks well, cause crystal clean water is good, but do you reckon you can filter too much.

I mean when it comes to humans if you live in a totally sterile environment you could end up lowering your immune system because you are not used to fighting off diseases, do you think its the same for fish? If you over filter you are creating a too perfect environment for them.

Just a thought I had what do you reckon.

Im sure this has recently been discussed

i don't think you can over filter personally, my filtration is way overboard and my fish are fine and always have been :)

i don't think so really. because the most part of filtration in our tanks is to get rid of ammonia, not to completely clean the water.

if you look at the discussions around keeping fish in pure RO water i.e. as close to pure H2o as you can, you'll see it's incredibly dangerous for them.

but our filters do not create a sterile environment, they most create an environment free from ammonia and nitrite and a few other bits and bobs depending on what chemical filtration you are using, so even if you have a filter rated for 100x your tank it's still not gonna be remvoing everything from teh water, just teh same elements but doing a better job,....... however your fish may not appreciate living in a whirlpool! ;)

cool just a thought I had, you know when you are sitting in work bored out of your coupon staring into space lol.

cheers chish

Yeah I think this is impossible. Having tons of filters will create a big current in the tank, so if you have stagnant water lovers like Discus, then it can be too much, but for most fish, I don't think you can filter too much.
