A few days ago a lady brought three oscars into the store where I work and said that if we didn't take them she was releasing them into the Hudson River (I told her that was majorly illegal but she didn't seem to care). I reluctantly took them and put them in one of our large tanks (luckily we had tank that was empty). Apparently the oscars had been in a 75 gallon tank with 6 african cichlids. I am not sure how long they were together but I feel so bad for these oscars. They all have massive damage from the africans attacking them. The only reason I can think of for the oscars even being alive still is that they were bigger than the africans. The oscars are about 6 or 7 inchs long and the africans were about 4 inchs. I think one of the oscars is going to die, its missing about 75 percent of its scales and has only the rays of one of its pectoral fins left and the other pect fin is in tatters. The other two oscars are missing about 25% of their scales and have a really horrible case of hole in the head. Also they were only fed feeder fish so they probably have internal parasites!

I got yelled at by my boss when he saw how bad they were because they won't be up for sale for awhile but I don't know what else we could do. Luckily I have gotten them to accept pellet food pretty quickly, I am guessing they went without food for a few days to a week before they were brought in so that made them a little more accepting of anything that smelled remotely edible.

I am so mad at that lady! What did to the oscars is just sick! If that was done to a dog or cat the person would be arrested!
