as the title really,

I've put some horticultural sand in the bottom of my tank (no water yet) after washing it within an inch of it's life (over 2 evenings)

now I'm reading that it really should be using playsand.

pft.

do I have to go buy / wash some more sand..?

:\

Is it called silver sand? I bought some from my garden centre originally and didn't use it as I thought it was a bit dark and went for playsand from Argos.

it just says 'horticultural sand' on it and 'washed and graded' (I think...)

just when I thought i'd got everything ready for the water to go in there... :)

anyone else useing this stuff..?

not 100% sure but you'd think horticultural would either have something added to help plants grow or would possibly not be fine enough to nto damage the fish's gills. I'd be dubious about using it :/

I think horticultural sand should be fine - although I haven't used it myself :p

It's just used to make the soil more porous and is recommended for sensitive plants like carnivores which don't like additives.

It's builders sand of any sort that is a no no  because of minerals and heavy metals

I read somewhere that you could test sand using a water hardness test kit - if you've got one. Test your tap water before and after adding the sand

ok, I don't have a kit to test for hardness but I think there is a place near me that I can take it to. My filter arrived today so hopefully I can get water in the tank at the weekend and start to cycle :D
