Hi all,

Pretty new to the aquarium life but am really enjoying it thus far!

I have just added 2 Odessa Barb's to my tank yesterday.

On my way home with them they had a solid black vertical line like in the image above, and a faint pink/red line horizontally across their body. Inside the separate tank at home these vertical lines went very faint and the pinkish one was almost none existent. Not too long after they were transferred to the main aquarium the black line came back and so did the pink horizontal one, but very strong this time. Today the pink, almost red line, was very intense and is now even in the fins. Is this normal? Is this just them adjusting to their new setting? I have heard some diseases with these symptoms but are not very common and not sure how they would have gotten it so quickly.

All help appreciated! Thanks.

Sounds like the wash out colour was due to stress.

How many gallons is the tank.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Ya guess I should have mentioned.

33gal.

1x albino algae eater
1x blue gourami
3x tetra
2x odessa barb

ammonia - nil
nitrite - nil
nitrate - 15
pH - ~7.5

Hows the fish now.

They are lively, it is just the appearance that has me concerned.

It seems now (didn't notice it yesterday) that the 3 tetras have redness in their fins as well. I am beginning to think more and more that this is a disease. I am just surprised it seemed to be the minute after I put the Barbs in the new tank, and that all 3 tetra's have it exactly the same places at exactly the same times. Maybe it could just be their feelings and attitude to new fish in the tank? Or less lucky, maybe an internal parasite?

Thanks.

Bump^

Any idea what kind of disease may cause what looks to be bleeding in the fins?

Thanks.

Septicemia

Symptoms:

Fish may have reddening at fin bases, blood streaks throughout the fins and body, small hemorrhages around the eyes. Dull listless behavior and lack of appetite may also be present.

Cause:

Systemic bacterial infection caused by various bacteria, including Aeromonas, Pseudomonas and Vibrio. The illness is often brought on by poor water quality or as a result of parasitic infestations or other infections. These bacteria enter the blood stream and circulate through the tissues causing inflammation and damage. Inflamed blood vessels in the skin and at fin bases stand out. Blood vessel and heart tissue damage cause hemorrhaging and consequently leakage of body fluids into the abdomen, which may lead to Dropsy.

Treatment:

Water conditions must be improved for all fish in the tank, regardless of how many fish are infected. Check your water’s Treat with Kanacyn or Tetracycline as well as with a medicated food if the fish will eat. If parasites are suspected, all the fish in the tank should be treated with antiparasitic medication. Using salt to help restore osmotic balance might be helpful.
