Hey everyone. I was doing a little shopping today at a WalMart and while the wife was off doing her thing, I went to check out the fish section of the pet department (as usual, of course). While I would never buy any of their fish since they keep them so unproperly, I did notice a really cool tank of red or 'cherry stripped' danios. I watched them for a long time and they were all about the same shade of red, but they were also al the exact same size. What I am wondering is if these fish are dyed or is this a natural coloring? It just looked to me as if the color was slightly unnatural, however, like I said, none were faded and they all had some nice bright white horizontal lines on them. Then again, this could be because they all just got died really recently and so I thought I would ask if anyone knew about these fishes.

Thanks!

I saw some reddish danios for $20 (overpriced, as usual for that store) and next to them was a sheet of paper explaining why they were red. It turns out that they are, in the egg stage, infused with a gene originating in coral. Therefore, like coral, the danio flouresced in blue or black light. They were created for use in some kind of experiment for radioactivity or something because danios are very hardy and the coral gene reacted to radiation. These danios, if the sheet was telling the truth, did not undergo any cruelty. Believeable, because chimeras are simply infused with a gene and not injected or subjected to any pain. (unless of course one thinks hybridizing is cruelty  )

Most likely they were 'glo-fish' then since they look exactly like the picture three-fingers posted as well as on that website. However, I could have gotten these fish for about a dozen for 10 dollars. This is probrably because WalMart doesnt staff itself with employees who know anything about fish and must have labeled them wrong or otherwise do not know the gold mine they are sitting on right now.

Perhaps I should make an exeption to my 'never going to buy fish from Walmart' rule just this once and get as many as I can. It would be pretty cool to have a large school of these fish in a tank with a blacklight on during the nighttime hours. Come to think of it though, I would be staring more at the back of my eyelids during the night than I would be at a fish tank!

Thanks for the info. I thought for sure that they could have been dyed since they dont seem to care about the fish, only selling them. Today I noticed that almost all of their tanks were holding non-compatable fish and even though their little price tags on the shelf said how the fish should be cared for, they didnt take the time to set the proper example!

I believe they are glofish. I've seen them at walmart before, and they aren't expensive. They're about 2.5x the price of a normal danio, but that's still only $2.50 :)
